How to get more handyman leads from Google Maps.

Map ranking rewards a short list of unglamorous things. Here they are.

· 6 min read

Maps decides most home repair calls before anyone visits a website. Google weighs three things: how relevant your profile is to the search, how close you are to the searcher, and how prominent you look compared with the other options.

Relevance is the part you control fastest. Pick the primary category that matches the majority of your work, add secondary categories for the rest, and list every service individually rather than as one line that says handyman services. Service names in your profile match against the words people type, which is why a shop that lists drywall repair, door adjustment and TV mounting shows up for searches a generic profile misses.

Set service areas around the places your trucks can reach, then build a useful page for each larger market. A focused profile covering six real suburbs will usually outperform a claim that stretches across North Texas.

Prominence is reviews, photos and activity. Recent reviews carry more weight than old ones, so a shop with forty reviews from this year usually outranks one with ninety from three years ago. Add photos after jobs, answer the questions section yourself, and post when your availability changes. None of this is clever. It is just done consistently by very few competitors.

The short version

  • List services individually. Generic profiles miss specific searches.
  • Claim only the areas you serve, then build pages for them.
  • Recent reviews and photos beat an old, larger review count.
